Hickory is the hardest of the domestic species we build in and the most varied. Rather than sorting the character out of it, this kitchen leans into it, with knots, mineral streaks and the natural swing between pale sapwood and dark heartwood all left on show under a weathered grey-brown stain.
The doors are a raised panel with a simple bead, the drawer fronts are slab, and wrought iron hardware suits the wood better than anything polished would. The layout wraps into a deep peninsula with a double sink, so the cook faces the room rather than the wall.
